Since 1997, Julia Schmid (*1969) has been working on pictures based on the exploration of the world of flowers and plants in their respective environments. She collects plants from the biotope typical of the places she examines (small garden plots, city walls, industrial zones, and streets) in an absolutely non-hierarchical way, making no distinctions between weeds, useful plants and ornamental plants. She produces microscopic close-ups of the collected plants, flowers, stems, fruits, roots, and nodules, devoid of a real surrounding. The pictures are not created according to a composition determined beforehand, but grow in an additive way. In their limitation to a specific biotope, cartographic subtexts as well as painterly portrayals of the regions she has visited evolve in Julia Schmid's pictures and painting cycles
